Tree of Life Hamsa #2

Stoneware, with my own glaze.

I find the symbol of the Hamsa fascinating. It is known as the Hand of Fatima or the Hand of Miriam, the Hand of Mary, or the Hand of the Goddess. It is primarily used as protection against the evil eye - against misfortune and sickness and it is ubiquitous throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East.

I carve these on lino using a mix of symbolism. This Hamsa has a Tree of Life where the Eye is usually used, as I wanted this ancient tradition of protection to connect to my own Celtic roots. Surrounding it is a flower mandala, the drawing and carving of which is an act of meditation and prayer. Finally, flowers are carved as part of the design, in a solar sunburst pattern, signifying both the protection and healing of nature and the power of the sun. This Hamsa is designed to be used as an incense holder, but it can also be used as a Ward or Amulet for protection, by hanging it up from the hole. The act of making them is meditative, almost prayerful....

These symbols are incredibly powerful. So many people want to feel protected, and safe, and having a personal amulet like this is something that obviously gives people comfort.
